A young Nigerian man who recently completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has given his entire 12-month allowance to his parents in appreciation of their support, a rare act of selflessness that underscores the importance of family values. His decision challenges the common trend among many NYSC members, who often spend their stipends on personal needs or savings for future expenses.
A viral video captured the emotional moment as he, dressed in his full NYSC uniform, presented the money to his parents. The man, who received N33,000 monthly throughout his service year, saved every penny to honor them.
In the video, he walks towards his parents’ house holding a brown envelope filled with cash. Upon entering, he meets his mother, who is visibly surprised and overjoyed. She embraces him warmly before his father joins them in the living room.
Recalling their sacrifices, including financial struggles and emotional support during his extra-semester examinations, he kneels and presents the money as a token of gratitude. His mother, overwhelmed with emotions, places her hands over her mouth, while his father nods approvingly, his eyes glistening with pride. He then removes his NYSC cap and places it on his mother’s head as a sign of respect before draping his jacket over his father’s shoulders. His parents, touched by the gesture, offer prayers for him.
The video sparked emotional reactions online. Many saw it as a rare and commendable financial decision, given that most NYSC members struggle with saving due to rising living costs.
One user, @roseberry_ankara, commented, “God bless him and take him to greater heights.”
Another, @uzoanneofficial, wrote, “There’s no way he’ll fail. Blessings follow those who honor their parents.”
@ken__shedrach_jolly added, “This is the right thing to do. Your parents supported you; they deserve this.”
Many described the young man’s act as inspiring, emphasizing the importance of honoring parents, a sentiment echoed in cultural teachings that stress the blessings of filial piety. Studies show that children who maintain strong familial ties tend to have better emotional well-being and resilience in adulthood.
His story serves as a powerful reminder of gratitude and the significance of family support in one’s journey. In many African cultures, honoring one’s parents is deeply valued, with traditions emphasizing the blessings that come from filial respect and appreciation.
