During a poignant service of songs honoring the late Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, prominent Igbo leaders united in their appeal for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom from DSS detention. The gathering, which took place in Enugu, highlighted that securing Kanu’s release was among Iwuanyanwu’s final aspirations before his death.

At the memorial event, leaders directed their plea to President Bola Tinubu, framing Kanu’s release as a way to honor Iwuanyanwu’s last wish. The ceremony showcased Iwuanyanwu’s legacy as a multifaceted Nigerian leader whose influence spanned nationalism and statesmanship.

Umuada Igbo Nigeria and in Diaspora, representing Igbo women globally, voiced strong support for two key initiatives: Kanu’s release and the commemoration of Iwuanyanwu’s contributions. Their leader, Lolo Kate Ezeofor, expressed hope for President Tinubu’s favorable response to both matters.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, speaking at the Eastern Nigeria Government lodge, praised Iwuanyanwu’s versatility: “His pioneering achievements in media, sports, industry, engineering, and aviation marked him as a visionary ahead of his time. His work ethic left an indelible mark on many, including myself.”

Dr. Sam Egwu, former Ebonyi State Governor, emphasized Iwuanyanwu’s commanding presence and character, while former Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, Chief Garry Igariwey, highlighted his unwavering dedication to Igbo interests.

Ambassador Okey Emuchay, Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s Secretary-General, noted Iwuanyanwu’s openness about his Biafran experiences and civil war journey. Professor Uche Azikwe, widow of Nigeria’s first president, joined others in advocating for Iwuanyanwu’s immortalization by the federal government.

The event underscored both Iwuanyanwu’s lasting impact on Nigerian society and the ongoing significance of Kanu’s detention to the Igbo community.
