Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN, Acting-President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, had ordered the immediate overhaul of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS with immediate effect.
The call for the overhaul of the SARS operatives had been ongoing with different hashtags trending on social media. The #Endsars trend has been trending on the social media platforms over the months and citizens had accused the police of unlawfully taking laws into their hands and extorting the public. There have been videos of SARs officials manhandling people with unnecessary force.
Human right activists had responded to the issues and urged the Nigerian government to take a wider review of the activity and management of the SARS operatives.
The news had come at a time when Nigerians had given up hope on the government reacting to the various human rights abuses labelled against the unit.
Many people had hailed the action of the president in listening to the voice of the citizens. This is just the second immediate action the acting president had taken since President Buhari travelled on a ten-day holiday medical trip. The decision of the vice president so far had been greeted with cheers as he is believed to have the support of the populace.
Prof. Osinbajo also encouraged human rights activist to prepare allegations of SARS operations which borders on human rights and how it has affected the lives of ordinary citizens.
This new development has triggered calls to overhaul Nigeria Police. If this happens, it is an action in the right direction and is a welcome development.
It is being viewed as a right step to reforming the Nigeria Police.
