Seychelles is lovely place and is also home to some great airports. There are about eight of them! Each one is unique and offers a different travel experience. So whether you’re looking for a laid-back beach holiday or an adventure-filled getaway, there’s an airport in Seychelles that’s perfect for you to facilitate your travel.

The Seychelles International Airport located on Mahe Island is the only airport linking Seychelles with the world. It, therefore, acts as the only gateway to Seychelles for international tourists. Other lesser domestic airports are linking the smaller islands.

Seychelles International Airport

This is the largest and busiest airport in Seychelles, located on Mahe Island. It is the only international airport of Seychelles connecting it with all major cities of the world. The airport is operated by the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority and has 3 terminals; international, domestic, and cargo. This is the international airport in Seychelles that serves as a base for the Seychelles Public Defence Force.

Seychelles International Airport is 11 kilometres away from Victoria, the capital of Seychelles. Other important airlines that operate in the Seychelles International Airport are Emirates, Air Seychelles, British Airways, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways. Among these, Air Seychelles operates the maximum number of flights and it is also the only airline company that has flights flying to other domestic settlements such as Praslin, Denis Island, Bird Island, and some other smaller islands.

Praslin Island Airport

Praslin Island airport, located on Praslin Island is a domestic airport 48 kilometres away from Mahe and is operated by the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority. It has a single terminal. 

The flight carriers in operation are Air Seychelles with scheduled flights to Seychelles International Airport and charter flights to various other islands of the country.

Alphonse Airport

Alphonse Airport is a small domestic airport located on Alphonse island which is a part of the Seychelles group of islands and 400 kilometres away from Mahe. Alphonse Airport is operated by the Islands Development Corporation and has a single runway. There is only one scheduled weekly flight from Alphone Airport to Seychelles International Airport.

The flight carrier in operation is Air Seychelles which has charter flights to and from Seychelles International Airport and only a single weekly scheduled flight from October to April. Aside from this period, you might not be able to get a flight. Alphonse Island Airport’s elevation is 10 ft / 3 m and the runway’s surface is concrete.

Assumption Island Airport

This is another domestic airport in Seychelles. It is located on Assumption Island which is 1135 kilometres southwest of Victoria. It is operated by the Islands Development Corporation which runs charter flights from Seychelles International Airport. It is an airfield with no passenger terminals and a single concrete runway. Having no passenger terminal can pose a challenge to those that desire it for sightseeing. Assumption Island Airport’s elevation is 10 ft / 3 m and the runway’s surface is concrete.

Bird Island Airport

Bird Island Airport is a private airfield located on Bird Island. It lies at a distance of 100 kilometres northwest of Victoria and is operated by the Bird Island Lodge.

The flight carriers in operation are Air Seychelles which flies a single charter flight daily to and from Seychelles International Airport. Charter flights and Helicopters can operate only on request when passengers wish to travel to other islands apart from Mahe. The flight to the Bird Island Airport is being arranged by one hotel on the island. Bird Island Airport’s elevation is 6 ft / 2 m and the runway’s surface is grass.

Fregate Island Airport

Fregate Island Airport situated 55 kilometres east of Victoria is also a private airstrip operated by the Fregate Island Resort and has a single runway that is not paved. The Fregate elevation is 10 ft / 3 m, and the runway is along the northeast shore of the island.

Flight carriers in operation include helicopters to and from Mahe and some charter flights operated by Air Seychelles.

Desroches Airport

Desroches Island was a former coconut and timber plantation. The airport located on Desroches Island is 230 kilometres southwest of Victoria and is operated by the Islands Development Corporation which runs two flights daily to and from Mahe Airport. Desroches elevation is 10ft/3m and the runway is concrete next to the Four Seasons Resort on this island.

Denis Island Airport

This is another private airstrip in Seychelles, located on Denis Island, 94 kilometres north of the capital, Victoria. Denis Island Airport has a single unpaved runway on which a single scheduled flight runs every day to transport passengers between Mahe and Denis. It also has charter flights operated by Air Seychelles and helicopter charters can also be booked when required. Denis Island’s elevation is 10 ft / 3 m and the runway’s surface is grass.

Conclusion

In addition to the ones stated above, Seychelles also has some other airports namely, Remire Island Airport, Platte Island Airport, Marie Louise Island Airport, Farquhar Island Airport, Astove Island Airport, Coetivy Island Airport, and D’Arros Island Airport. Most of these airports are small private airstrips with a single paved/unpaved runway and operated by the Islands Development Corporation (IDC) with charter flights run by Air Seychelles or IDC.
