Overview of Federal Ministries in Nigeria and their functions

There are over 25 ministries in Nigeria, each of which is saddled with specific responsibilities and assignments; each of the ministries is usually headed by an individual (minister) upon approval by the President and Senate. The Federal Ministries in Nigeria are as listed below:

  1. Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development: this federal ministry is saddled with the responsibility of:
  • Regulating and enhancing agricultural research in the country
  • Training of agricultural workers and relevant stakeholders through proven techniques
  • Rehabilitation of degraded agricultural land.
  1. Ministry of Information and Communication. Its functions are:
  • Provide citizens with the latest happenings in the various arms of government
  • They ensure proper dissemination of local and international information as it concerns the well-being of Nigerians
  1. Ministry of Defence.
  • Prepares national defence policies that will ensure Nigeria’s security
  1. Ministry of Education
  • Maintain uniform standards of education in every institution in Nigeria
  1. Ministry of Environment.
  • Liaise with other state agencies to ensure the protection of the environment
  1. Ministry of Finance and Economic Development
  • Prepare an annual fiscal budget
  • Propose bills, salaries and pension terms
  • Manage government financial assets
  1. Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Defend state interest in interest in international conference and forums
  • Political negotiation between the government and international bodies
  1. Ministry of Federal Capital Territory:
  • Oversee infrastructural and physical development in the state
  1. Ministry of Health and Social Services
  • Develops and implement health policies and programs
  • It is responsible for health care development as well as hospital development in Nigeria
  1. Ministry of Information and culture:
  • Provide professional information that projects the federal government and her people as responsible
  • Provision and Dissemination of essential and authentic information in a way that will enhance the democratic governance of Nigeria
  1. Ministry of Interior
  • Regulates passport and immigration in Nigeria
  • Granting of Nigeria citizenship
  • Management of national emergencies
  1. Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General
  • Ensures access to justice for all and sundry
  • Tracking of any recovered government assets
  • Ensure collaboration with the government, international communities to enhance proper justice delivery
  1. Ministry of Labour and employment
  • Formulates policies for the development of labour policies
  1. Ministry of Niger Delta
  • To ensure safety and security of the Niger Delta region
  • Liaise with private oil companies for pollution control in the environment
  • Initiation and supervision of policies governing the oil and gas sector
  1. Ministry of Petroleum Resources
  • Implementation and regulation of policies in the Oil and Gas sector
  1. Ministry of Power, Works and Housing
  • It handles the establishment and maintenance of power plants
  1. Ministry of Solid Mineral Development
  • Regulation of sales, consumption and transport of solid minerals in the state
  1. Ministry of Science and Technology
  • Enhance the development of science and technology apparatus available in Nigeria institutions
  1. Ministry of Transportation
  • Develop transportation policies
  • Oversee the construction and maintenance of Government infrastructural projects
  1. Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development:
  • Ensures effective production and distribution of potable water in Nigeria
  • Support and evaluate programmes such as the National Water Resources Institute
  1. Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development
  • Protects the rights of women in the society to ensure that no woman is victimized
  • Ensure that women are integrated into national processes
  1. Ministry of Youths and Sports development;
  • Initiates youth development programmes for young Nigerians
  • It supervises sport policies and developments in other to ensure effective sporting activities in Nigeria
