Ezinifite, Aguata LGA: Woman Unleashes Brutality on Teenage Maid Over Alleged Theft 0f N25000

Awka, Anambra State – In a distressing case of domestic violence, the Anambra State Government has rescued a 19-year-old maid, Chidiebere Otenyi, from the clutches of her abusive employer, Martha Umenweke. The incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation, unfolded in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

Acting swiftly on a whistleblower’s report, the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare intervened, rescuing the victim and apprehending the suspect, Umenweke. The accused has been handed over to law enforcement authorities for interrogation and will face prosecution at the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Magistrates’ Court in Awka.

The harrowing ordeal came to light when Chidiebere, a native of Nkanu, Enugu State, narrated her ordeal. According to her account, Umenweke accused her of stealing N25,000, an allegation she vehemently denied. However, Umenweke’s rage escalated, and she subjected the young maid to a brutal assault, leaving her in excruciating pain.

Chidiebere’s testimony revealed a pattern of abuse and deprivation, as she had endured severe punishments and starvation at the slightest provocation during her year-long employment with Umenweke.

Ify Obinabo, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, expressed outrage over the incident and vowed to ensure that the perpetrator faces the full force of the law. “We will not tolerate such inhumane treatment of vulnerable individuals in our state,” Obinabo stated firmly.

This disturbing case follows closely on the heels of a similar incident in Anambra, where a lawyer was accused of abusing her 11-year-old house help, prompting intervention from the Minister of Women Affairs.

The Anambra State Government’s resolute action in rescuing Chidiebere and apprehending Umenweke sends a strong message that domestic abuse, particularly against minors and vulnerable individuals, will not be tolerated within its borders. The case is expected to garner widespread attention as it navigates the judicial system, with advocates and human rights organizations closely monitoring its progress.
