Nigeria’s .ng Domain Gains Momentum, Over 215,000 Businesses On Board

Nigeria’s homegrown internet domain, .ng, is experiencing a surge in popularity, with over 215,000 businesses now embracing the locally-branded online identity. The Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NiRA), the custodian of the country’s top-level domain, is on a mission to ensure that all Nigerian enterprises recognize the security significance of localizing their website domain names.

During NiRA’s Annual General Meeting in Lagos, the Association’s President, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, unveiled the latest figures, revealing that as of February 2024, NiRA registrars have registered a staggering 215,441 .ng domain names.

Akinsanya emphasized the growing prominence of .ng, Nigeria’s Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD), for websites and email addresses, stating, “The number of .ng domain names reached 212,890 as per NiRA’s Audited Account for the year ending December 31st, 2023. This represents an increase of 29,098 compared to the 183,792 recorded as of December 2022.”

He further underscored the critical role of the .ng domain in the country’s digital economy agenda, highlighting the need for both government and private institutions to embrace the locally-branded online identity. “The transition to the .ng brand is no longer a matter of negotiation, given its significant role in the country’s digital economy agenda,” Akinsanya asserted.

NiRA’s efforts have garnered support from Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, who has demonstrated a keen understanding of the necessity to intensify the adoption of Nigeria’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD), .ng, within and beyond government circles. Akinsanya commended the Minister’s commitment, stating, “We commend Dr. Bosun Tijani for his understanding of the need to intensify the adoption of the .ng domain within and outside the government circle.”
